An Amazing School Year!

Korri & I raised some money for the Harrisburg Chapter of the American Lung Association. We did the annual Asthma Walk on City Island and some of the boys came with us!

The longer Andy & I do this job the better we become at organizing 12 boys and 2 children. However, that does not mean the job gets any easier. This fall we had a number of students who played soccer and flag football.

During the holiday months several were in the choir, band and drama programs.
Others participated in wrestling, hockey and basketball (whew!!).

Now that Spring is just around the corner, things are beginning to slow down. We are looking forward to the longer and warmer days so that all the kids (including Andy) can be outside longer! Our hope is that as you view these photos and read this blog that you would be inspired to pray for these young men. Also, if you know of a child who could benefit from living and learning at Milton Hershey School please drop us a line!

Love, Andy & Deanna

Student Home Family Vacation

Deep Creek Lake State Park!

We traveled to Deep Creek Lake State Park in Western Maryland. The state park was where we pitched our tents and slept for 3 nights. We spent the days hiking waterfalls and tubing on the lake. We also fished and went white water rafting in Ohiopyle State Park. The Youghigheny River is marvelous and has some of the most difficult rapids in the country. It was thrilling! Here are some photos of our trip...

Busy Spring!

We stayed pretty busy this Spring attending Matt & Cory's baseball games with the Junior High traveling team and catching a few intramural games with Eric & Fabian's team. We tapped the maple trees around our home for syrup and helped the AEE program re-stock the Manada Creek with adult trout that were raised in the trout hatchery on campus.

With just 1 more day of school until the 8th Grade Graduation and Last Day of School, summer is fast approaching. We will take a student home vacation to end the year with a blast from June 19-23. We plan to camp at Deep Creek Lake State Park for 4 days and go White Water Rafting @ Ohiopyle.

Kenneth Hatt Trip To Ocean City, Maryland

Kenneth Hatt is a gentleman who helps fund student home trips so that the kids can increase their awareness of cultural issues. Our student home took a trip to Ocean City, Maryland. We named our trip "E-Racism" because we discussed racism and racial reconciliation at MHS and in our student home. We went to see the movie Glory Road--which was powerful! We also got a huge discount at the hotel (Princess Royale) because our trip was in January. The guys jumped in to the Ocean because Mr. Slamans challenged them to a Polar Bear Plunge. Almost everyone did it! There was a warm jacuzzi waiting for them on the outside deck so that helped.

Christmas At Great Wolf Lodge

For the Christmas Season we went to the Poconos and Great Wolf Lodge Indoor Water Park. We spent 2 days swimming and playing on the slides and in the indoor wave pool (yes, a wave pool indoors)! Korri & AJ took to the water like fish! We used this "non-gift" family time to show all our kids how much we care about them this Christmas Season.

MHS - SH Harpers

We are houseparents of 12 boys in grades 6-8th. Our boys are:

  • Andrew Altman - 7th grade
  • Brandon Ayala - 8th grade
  • Eric Campuzano - 7th grade
  • Jordan Crawford - 8th grade
  • Matthew Lepore - 7th grade
  • Marcous Marchese - 7th grade
  • Roman Oxley - 6th grade
  • Fabian Perez - 8th grade
  • Anthony Roberts - 6th grade
  • Darian Trostle - 6th grade
  • Cory Whitley - 7th grade
  • Christopher Worsley - 6th grade

Most of the boys are new to us this year with only 4 veterans returning (Cory, Matt, Eric & Andrew - who we call AA or "Double A"). All of our 6th graders are new as well as our 8th graders. Marcous came to us the first week in January from another student home.

Our students are from various places ranging from Philadelphia, to Allentown, Delware & Vermont. They are as different from one another as you would expect, but they get along well and spend lots of time together playing football and basketball outdoors.
